Assisted living communities are providing many new options, but Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, has taken this another step further by offering a unique living environment for the early stages of memory loss. Aspen Cottage Assisted Living Memory Care Community offers private rooms in a home-like atmosphere.
This new community of Bartels is celebrating its first anniversary. Plus, Bartels’ traditional assisted living community, Linden Place, is continuing to go strong.
The combination of these two communities with the long-standing, quality assisted living of Linden Place and the new opportunity to remain in assisted living even with the early stages of memory loss, gives residents and their families more options.
Maurice Campbell and Clarice Paulsen are a perfect example of these communities. These two “sweethearts,” as Maurice explains, met as next-door neighbors in Linden Place.
After many years of working for railroad companies and traveling all around the midwest, Maurice loves to strike up a conversation and visit. It didn’t take long for the two neighbors to enjoy each other’s company.
“Bartels is a beautiful facility and has good people,” Maurice noted. “And we both had nice apartments in Linden Place.”
Clarice has now moved to Aspen Cottage, and Maurice comes to visit her most afternoons. A small tear formed as Clarice spoke about not being right next door to Maurice, but she is very thankful she can remain on the same campus and see him daily.
Aspen Cottage was created to look and feel like a home with shared activity areas in the kitchen, dining, living room and outside terrace. Residents have the freedom to safely interact with family and friends, along with programming to encourage independence. The staff has a commitment to physical, social, spiritual and emotional wellness, while accommodating individual needs.
“My room is nice and I have my own bathroom. They do a good job of keeping it clean and neat and tidy for me,” Clarice remarked, “Just how I like it.”
When not in her room, she enjoys the large open space where she can visit and interact with others. At the age of 95 and 96 respectively, Clarice and Maurice move freely around Aspen Cottage and enjoy the living area and outside terrace.
The Aspen Cottage trained staff is available to assist 24/7 and spend quality time getting to know the residents and their interests and talents, including Maurice’s love of singing old songs with another Aspen resident around the piano.
Linden Place offers private apartment-style living with a blend of personal support and health care services to help residents stay active and independent. Residents can enjoy the independence they want with the security, companionship and reassurance that comes from being a part of a continuing care community. There are three levels of assistance, attentive staff, social activities, a wellness program, transportation and well-balanced meals.
Both communities give priority admission to other levels of care offered at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community campus including skilled nursing and rehabilitation and dementia care.
